Roof and Wall Thermal Values: Cutting Through I-Code Confusion
Architectural Roofing & Waterproofing Monday, February 11, 2013
"Since 2000, the I-Codes have served as models for almost all state and local codes in the United States. The 2012 edition of the I-Codes includes several landmark advances in building energy efficiency and sustainability. Not only does the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) include new and higher thermal standards for almost every roof and wall assembly, but these standards are further increased in the new International Green Construction Code (IgCC), which is intended to serve as an overlay code, or "above the code" standard for sustainable buildings." "Before beginning your rooftop PV project, the installer must consider many issues. Careful, detailed preparation can prevent cost over-runs, re-doing work and scheduling-delays during a rooftop PV project. Proper preparation and advance work ultimately means risk reduction for the installer and a more successful and efficient project, not to mention happy customers." Read More.
Thanks for Making RoofPoint a Success
Roofing Contractor Wednesday, December 5, 2012
"When I started this column last January, I introduced a new sustainable roof rating program called RoofPoint. Developed by the [Center] and supported by an initial grant from the Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress, the primary mission of RoofPoint was to gain more visibility and recognition for the high-quality roofs our industry delivers on a daily basis across North America - roofs that save energy, extend service life and make buildings better and safer for the people who live and work in them." Is This a LEED Roof?
Roofing Contractor Friday, November 2, 2012
"For roofing professionals, one of the biggest challenges of the LEED Green Building Rating System has been the common misconception that there is something called a "LEED roof." However, because LEED is intended to provide a measure of total building sustainability rather than the sustainability of individual components, it is next to impossible to separate roofing out from the overall LEED system. Unfortunately, that hasn't stopped many building owners from demanding that roofing professionals provide them with a roof that embodies the entire LEED system." Read More.
Hats Off to the Metal Roofing Contractor
Roofing Contractor Wednesday, October 3, 2012
"This month's focus on metal in Roofing Contractor gives me a great opportunity to take a look at the sustainability of one of our oldest roofing systems. Well before anyone started talking about green construction, metal roofing was delivering sustainable benefits to buildings across the globe. Few construction materials are as recyclable as metal, and the total recycled content of metal roof panels is among the highest available. In terms of durability and service life, perhaps only slate and tile are in the same league." Read More.

Going Back to School for Sustainability
Roofing Contractor Friday, September 7, 2012
For contractors wanting to get more involved in recycling, maybe it's time to go back to school to learn just how effective modern recycling programs can be. Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal of Wheeling, W. Va. certainly gets an "A" for their recycling efforts at Brooke High School in Brooke County, W. Va. For starters it was a very large roofing project calling for the removal of 260,000 square feet of existing EPDM roofing membrane installed many years before. Read More.
Green Roof Trends: From LEED to RoofPoint
Today's Facility Manager Thursday, August 16, 2012
"At the beginning of 2011, the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing (the "Center") launched a sustainable guideline for roofing systems that seeks to transform roofing - both in practice and in public perception. This new guideline, called RoofPoint, is similar in function and structure to green building rating systems such as LEED, but it embraces important differences that offer special value to building owners, fms, and other members of the green building building community."
